You’re moving. You’re stressed out and you have no idea what you are doing. Don’t feel bad because regardless of how many times you have moved there are always ways to do it more efficiently. Moving is one of those things you can never know too much about.
Now, you have the basics, newspaper, boxes and some buddies to help you pack up but do you have enough socks for your wine glasses? Do you have some cheap plates to use to pack your good ones? Didn’t think so.
Read on to learn some of the most unusual tricks to help you move the right way.
Socks On The Stemware
This is a fantastic idea because it is basically a twofer. You have to pack up your socks for the move anyway but by using them to pad the stemware you are freeing up box space while protecting your delicate wine glasses. You could find yourself with fewer boxes to move by using tips like this.
Use Old Sheets
Here is another way to free up space in your boxes: use old sheets as protection around furniture and mattresses. There is no need to buy special cloths to protect your furniture during the move, most of us have old sheets around that will do the job just fine. The more you use them around your furniture the less you will have to pack in boxes.
Color-Coding
If you were thinking of simply writing what room each box was for, scrap that idea. It is far simpler and quicker to make up a simple legend with each room designated a specific color. Then just stick on that colored sticker or tape to the box and you will know exactly where it goes.
Protect Your Plates With More Plates
A quick trip to the dollar store will provide you with a cheap bag of Styrofoam plates that you can use to pad your dishes.
Rather than wrapping each plate individually with newspaper or bubble wrap (so time-consuming!) you can simply place the Styrofoam plates in between your dishes. This will give them the padding they need to stay safe during the moving process.
Bag Up Your Clothing
Painstakingly removing each item of clothing from the hangers, folding them up and putting them in boxes neatly can take an enormous amount of time that you probably don’t have to waste so ditch the boxes and grab some garbage bags.
Keep in mind this option is only really good if you are not hiring professional movers because many won’t move anything if it isn’t in a box. But if you are doing a DIY move, bagging your clothes is definitely the way to go.
All you have to do is separate the clothes into groups that will fit in a bag, open the bag wide and put the clothes in from the bottom up. The bag should slide right up over your clothes, hangers and all. Then when it comes time to unpack, everything is ready for hanging.
Use these unusual moving tips and you will be shocked at the amount of time you will save during the moving process.
